I'm having a problem installing HP printer driver on a TS to which I'm
connecting remotely. Basically when I start the .exe driver file
downloaded from HP's website it tells me that I have to use 16bit
colour display to run this driver. Why on earth do I need 16bit colour
depth to install a bloody driver in the first place?! Anyway, I set up
my remote desktop connection to use 16bit colour space just to find
out that when I'm connected it gives me 256 colours only. Eventually I
extracted the .exe with winrar but now I've got another problem. There
are plenty of .inf files in there and I've got no idea which one
should I use. Any help on this?
Cheers

Did you already install the RDP 6.0 client?

No that I remember. Possibly it got installed with one of the updates.
Anyway I just chose a random .inf and it works. However it would be
good
to know for the future how do I pick the right file.

Hi,

When you install a printer manually you do not point to a particular .inf
file but to a *folder*. You do not need to know which particular file to
use.

What kind of printer? If it's a consumer-grade multifunction with a
monolithic installation file (for software), don't install it on a terminal
server. However, if there are individual drivers available, when you extract
the files, and run the add printer wizard, just point it at the it should
find the files it needs to install the driver.

You should probably post TS questions in
m.p.windows.server.terminal_services, by the way - TS has some funky issues
with printing.

Whoops, correction: point it at the *folder* into which you extracted the
files.

I would not install third party printer drivers on a TS. This
will most likely cause problems initially or down the line.

If needed use a MS W2K3 compatible driver that was loaded with
the system.

If this printer accepts PCL commands use the generic HP LaserJet
driver.

Re: HP printer drivers on a TS

Colour depth is just the nature of your TS session.
You need to:
- extract the files
- use the Add Drivers dialogue in the Print Server Properties to add the
driver. If you use "Have Disk" and navigate to the folder you extracted it
will give you the options of which printer driver to add,

Well indeed that's the case here. When clicking on Have Disk I have to
point to a file
not a folder as the Open button will disappear only when I choose 1
file and click it.

Re: HP printer drivers on a TS

Not true. You need to point to a folder. You can even type in the name of
the folder instead of browsing for it. Try to extract the files in C:\temp
and type the folder name in the add printer dialog.
