XP problem

Hii, frequently when I try to close a program, or shut down, i get this
screen that says tht the program is taking longer than expected to shut down
and gives me the option to End Now. I hve done a disk clean up and run a
defrag - is there anything else I can do to stop this from happening? What
is causing it? Many thanks in advance :-)
