I have Windows XP with SP3.

I have my windows updates set to automatic. However when the updates are
done I get a CONSTANT reminder to restart my computer so that the updates
can take effect. (Now I've been running personal computers for about 15
years, and rebooting for changes to take effect was one of the first things
I learned. The constant reminder is pain in the butt.) The reminder message
appears every 05 to 10 minutes.

When the (annoying) reminder message is not appearing on screen, it sits
next to the clock as a small yellow shield icon. The icon does not have a
delete option, so I cannot delete it the normal way. Is there a way to
delete it other than rebooting my computer?

Why not simply reboot. Whatever update has downloaded and requested the
reboot, the update will not be fully installed until you reboot the system.

And if the update is related to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx"
then I suggest you reboot immediately otherwise you're still vulnerable.

Some items or programs THAT I HAVE NOT FINISHED WITH are deleted or ended
upon rebooting.

By the way, I realize that the update will not be installed until I reboot.
I do not have to be constantly reminded.

Then why haven't you configured AU to notify only then that way you choose
when to install and reboot. If you have it set to download and install
automatically naturally you will be nagged to reboot when required.

Change your settings if it's a problem.

I'd point you to the KB article that tells you how to configure AU such that
updates are only installed when you're ready to reboot but I'd be wasting my
time: I've pointed you to the same KB for well over a year now and you're
still not using the tools at your fingertips.

getting a constant reminder to reboot even after
the update has been installed and he has rebooted.

Barry has configure updates to automatic which sometimes require a reboot.
All Barry has to do is reconfigure AU to notify only and the problem is
solved.

Barry has auto downloaded the updates and installed the same but does not
wish to reboot and of course is being nagged to reboot.

Apparently Barry is refusing to adjust his settings so Barry will have to
put up with the constant nagging.
