Re: Problem with Telephony Service

plug the phone in and go to the device manager and right click on the phone
device and disable it

then try again hyperterminal

you can also try in the device manager to go to the menu VIEW> Show hidden
devices...

let me know what happens because this is rare but it seems that not many
have found a solution to this

Problem with Telephony Service

Hi There,

I am trying to run HyperTerminal on my Vista x64 workstation in order to
configure Cisco switches. Problem is that when I try to open HyperTerminal I
get the following error: "another program is using the selected telephony
device. Try again after the other program completes." I cannot find ANY other
device that would use this service.

I do not have a modem, and I do connect my cell phone to the computer via
USB but it is currently NOT connected. In "Phone and Modem Options" I do have
a default location. I suspect this to be the culprit and would like to delete
but can't. I have disabled the Telephony Service, restarted the workstation
and restarted the service and continue to get the same error.

I know this can work, as the other engineers in my department are
functioning just fine. I am the only (un)lucky one with this problem.

Thanks for any help.
Debbie

Re: Problem with Telephony Service

Yes, that is how I connect my phone, but it is NOT connected at the moment
and was NOT connected when i went through the steps below including disabling
the service, rebooting, and restarting the service.

Re: Problem with Telephony Service

A least we found the culprit :-)

An idea (but this is an experiment of course) is to

borrow a bluetooth usb device from someone (if your cellphone has bluetooth)
and try to use a bluetooth connection instead of
a direct cable to the cell phone.

Im thinking about something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Bluetooth-PC-USB-Adapter/dp/B0002WRGI0

It seems that the usb driver is creating this problem....

If you can do this please post back your findings

good luck ;-)

Re: Problem with Telephony Service

Hummm.....that was it. I plugged the phone back in, went to device manager,
portable devices, and disabled windows mobile-based device. thanks so much
for the help.

But with the device disabled, I won't be able to access it via the Mobile
Device center. I just tested and it just says "connecting" ooops just
errored. How can I get both to work??? I guess it's not that big a deal as i
don't use hyperterminal enough but still an oddity.

Re: Problem with Telephony Service

this might be a problem actually of the driver itself...
and not windows...

you can take a look at the knowledge base or contact support of the cell
phone manufacturer and ask them...

perhaps THEY know a work around...

remember you are using 64 bit version of windows and not all drivers are
fully compatible

MS is a bit nearsighted... the bug has to be the size of an elephant for
them to notice ;-)

that’s one big bug... lol

Re: Problem with Telephony Service

They RTMed knowing about the bugs,
they finished SP1 knowing there were bugs....

Its all about economics... waiting for perfection is costly.

now we are headed for SP2, a beta of that is already out.

I actually had a USB Bluetooth device that I just gave to one of the guys on
the help desk. I will see if I can get it back. How does one go about
submitting a bug to MS for a fix? I can't be the only one with this problem.

Waiting for perfection ?
You got a guarantee at birth of that perfection ?
It's a friigen awesome OS compared to ALL other currently available and
previous OS.
Just cause your a whiney little girl, don't spread the menstruation with
