Hi, All.
I still fixing my wifes PC after a crash and a WinXP reload...
Rogers-Yahoo is our Internet provider so it seemed only natural to use
its "free", i.e. paid for, protection software (a Symantec program
suite) - so I downloaded it and installed it (as I did on my 3 GHz
Pentium4 PC where it seems to work fine.) However, my wife's PC is
only about 500 MHz. Symantec won't scan and I can't seem to fix it.
Also, the PC ran fast enough before I downloaded the Roger-Yahoo stuff
but now it's slowed to a crawl - every file transfer, even in the
machine, seems to be virus checked and it takes far too long.
Anyway, I propose to take the Roger-Yahoo stuff out and install free
home use Avast anti-virus (I've used it before - seems fine, runs fast
and announces regular updates in a nice voice!)
My question: How to get Symantec out? "Add/remove programs" in
Control panel shows only one folder called "Live Update (Symantec)
19.64 MB". But a search on Symantec in file and folder names shows no
less than 14 files and folders, i.e. many more files.
Is my best procedure to:
Use "add/remove programs" to remove "Live Update (Symantec)",
Then search for any Symantec folders and filenames left and delete
them,
Then download and install Avast,
Then use Registry Mechanic to clean up the registry?
Thanks for all advice.
Cheers,
Roger
