Problem with network transfers in Windows 2003 Server

Ok, i'll start off with my network topology.

I have a Windows 2003 Server (SP3) running a 5TB RAID5.
I have 1 Windows XP workstation, 1 Windows 2000 Workstation and one Ubuntu
Linux workstation.

Please note I did not have this problem when I was running XP Pro on the
machine that is now running 2003 Server, so I have almost no reason to
believe it is a hardware problem.

I am running simple file sharing (This is a home network, I had to go to
2003 to handle GPT volumes unfortunately).

I have administrative accounts on all 3 windows machines with administration
permissions and the same password.

The Issue:

When I login to one of the workstations and transfer a large file off the
server it fails in the middle of the transfer saying "That network resource
is no longer available". If I try again, or try to copy the file from another
workstation it fails at the exact same point. (I have tested this with video
files and the playback ends at the exact same frame every time, but not the
same point in 3 different files, for example at 10 megs in one file and 20
megs along in another file, both of the same size)

However, if I login to the server and copy from the server to the
workstation it works fine.

Also if I access the server share with the Ubuntu (Linux) box it copies fine
with no errors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Problem with network transfers in Windows 2003 Server

Hello Kevin,

Never heard about SP3 for server 2003, is it a typo? Did you use the latest
NIC drivers for the server and the workstations?

Have you installed the hotfix that turns off SNP? It's usually very
troublesome. Make sure your NIC driver is current as well.

SP2, fat-fingered :P

As for the network drivers, all machines are using new Rosewill RTL8169
Gigabit PCI cards, With a realtek driver dated 10/15/2008.

It's worth noting that I have put in different network cards and used a
different switch and get the same issue.

I just installed that hotfix and the issue persists.

The specific line given is "The specified network name is no longer
available".

Also, if I take a specific folder and share it the place in the file where
it fails is different compared to the place where it fails if I am not
sharing it's folder specifically.

WindowsServer2003-KB948496-x86-ENU.exe is the hotfix I assume you mean btw.

Ok, I was starting at the bottom and working up. NIC driver up to
date, yes? What about event viewer, any event IDs in there?

With the "The specified network name is no longer available" error, do
you have any Error numbers (i.e., Error 45: The specified network
name..., etc.)?

Look at these KB articles as well as there is mention of "The
specified network name is no longer available" in them.

Yes.

The NIC driver is the latest one off Realtek's site.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...n=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true

WinXP (WinServer 2003) Driver 669 2008/10/15 256k

The card is this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166002 and has the
RTL8169S chipset.

> What about event viewer, any event IDs in there?

I cleared the event logs on both workstation and server and no new events
came up on either when it failed.

"Cannot Copy Filename: The specified network name is no longer available" is
all it says.

The first two are symantec related, and i'm running no symantec services.

As for the third Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) is not installed, and Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) is
stopped under services.

Thanks for the help btw. This has been giving me fits for weeks.

Ok. How about the NIC drivers on the workstations? Both up to date? XP
on SP3 + all current WU patches already? WIndows 2000 on SP6a + all
current patches already? Since you can initiate a copy from server to
workstation fine but a copy initiated from workstation fails,
something doesn't make any damn sense with that. What about the switch
or router connecting these together? What make and model and firmware
is it running? What is providing DHCP? Are the server and workstations
statically assigned or DCHP assigned IPs?

Yes, as up-to-date as I can make them.

Static IPs, and I have tested another switch, and a crossover cable with no
change to results. I've also changed out the network cables, again no change.

Yes, the only thing that makes any sense is somehow the permissions in 2003
are failing the transfer. But I know less than nothing about that :S

When I change some of the security settings in 2003 that I don't know much
about and try again it fails at different paints. (When it fails it fails in
the EXACT same place in a file no matter when i'm copying it, or which
workstation i'm copying it with. After I change something in security
settings on the file that place of failure changes)

And remember Linux copies without failing (it's a dual-boot on the 2000
machine, so the same hardware that is failing in windows)

Also, a transfer via FTP from the windows workstations (using a simple ftp
server on the 2003 server) does not fail.

This sounds like something really dumb or simple is missing from the
whole equation. The file cannot be corrupt because it can transfer
fine via FTP and be pushed from server to workstation. Try the
following, open Control Panel > Network Connections > on Local Area
Connection, do a right-click and choose properties, if QoS is there,
uninstall it so that only File and Printer Sharing, Client for MS
Networks, and TCP/IP remain, nothing else. Reboot. Try it now and let
me know how that goes.

QoS wasn't there, but "Network load balancing" was there and unchecked.

I removed it, rebooted and tested again and so far I have not gotten a
failure.

So, i'm cautiously hopeful that fixes it. :)

Network Load Balancing will only appear on the Server and if it's not
being used, you can take it off safely. Did you check on the
Workstations for QoS as well?
