iTunes download screwed up my computer

Hi. I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes, and it's wrecked
my CD/DVD functionality. (This happened to me once before, too, but I
assumed it was a broken optical drive, so I installed a new one.)

The only thing that works now is playing songs in the iTunes library.
If I try to play a CD or DVD, there's a ticking sound, and distortion.
This is true even if I used a different player from iTunes.

If I try to upload a CD into iTunes, iTunes does it, but at about
1/15th the normal speed, and all other computer functions are slowed
down drastically while the upload is occurring.

Any ideas on fixing this?

Thanks,
Dave

Re: iTunes download screwed up my computer

completely uninstall iTunes
then if you have to use crapware,
reinstall it and DO NOT allow any default settings,
do not allow it to take over any default functions assigned to other
players.
Read the instructions before you click yes
Itunes, like RealPlayer, should not be permitted to change file associations

Per mae:

Which begs a question: Has anybody found a substitute for iTunes
that works for them?

I'm not in love with iTunes either and have tried a few
alternatives - such as FooBar2000, MusicMatch and MediaMonkey.

I still use MediaMonkey for my Fuze, but it doesn't do the iPod
very reliably. Among other things it seems to have problems with
play counts and played vs not played and doesn't do video.

Is iTunes the only game in town?
