Shut down issue

Hi,

Something weird has started happening to my computer. When I shut down I
click Start > Turn Off Computer > Turn Off, but I have to do it twice. The
first time you can hear the computer “thinking” then nothing happens. The
second time everything shuts down normally. This has just started within the
last couple months or so. I have not had any infections/malware/spyware.
The only thing that was found on my computer by Malwarebytes was
Adware.PopCap.

Does anyone know how to fix this. Thanks.

Pentium IV, Windows XP Home SP2 IE6

Do you use dailup internet?

My XP does the same thing if I try to shutdown when I'm online. The first
time will only turn off the dialup software, and the second time I click
shutdown it will actually shutdown.

Re: Shut down issue

Hi ShadowTek,

Yes, I'm on dialup. But I've been on dialup with the same ISP for 4 years
and this has just started happening. Its never done it before. I disconnect
first. Then I shut down.

Does it ever require 2 shutdown attempts, like I described my XP does, if
you try to shutdown *before* you disconnect?

Re: Shut down issue

I don't know. I've not tried to shut down while I was still connected. I've
always disconnected first.

The reason that I ask is if yours also does that is that there may be some
part of your modem driver or dailup software that isn't shuting down
properly. And, if that is the case then you have somewhere to start.

Re: Shut down issue

Hi Judy,

Since you are on dialup at this point, not telling you to upgrade, just
open My Computer. Locate the partition / drive containing your operating
system. Right-click and click Properties.

Now click Tools. Click Check Now. Check both options. Click Start. Click
Yes to Schedule and reboot to run.

You might have a problem with the File System. Running Chkdsk /f will
fix the problem.

However, I would manually clean out your \Temp Folders, by deleting all
Files and sub-folders in your \Temp Folders and running Disk Cleanup. Check
all options. Then reboot the computer.

Re: Shut down issue

Hi thecreator,

Ok, did it all. Even used ccleaner for temp files. It still not shutting
down the first time. I guess its not critical, just annoying. If I could
get off dialup I would. I'm in an area where the only service would be
through the town's own, and no one I've talked to likes it. Only other
option would be Earthlink's satellite at $800/mo. Not!

So guess I'll just have to be annoyed. :))

Thank you for your help.

Re: Shut down issue

Hi Judy,

Often times the "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service has helped many users
(myself included). Download and install it from:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

Post back, and let us know how it works.

Nope.

This will happen when I am simply using the Compuserve2000 dailup software
for the basic connection.

Happens to me sometimes so I hope a solution is found.
I am on broadband.
For me the problem seems to be related to the fact that my profile
settings are not always restored correctly on start up, and I have to
logoff then logon to get the correct settings.
