Hey this is my first question so sorry if it's in the wrong place...

So since my computer hates me it has decided to stop the cd-rom from
working. A quick check in device manager showed that it was detecting it, but
wasn't loading the drivers (error 39).

So I went here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

and downloaded the "guided help". When I tried to use it, I got this lovely
message:

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w247/cheeseman123_2007/cdsux2.jpg

So...I'm lost. What do I do now? I really need these CD drives.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. To anyone who doubts my operating system is missing the drivers and
it's a hardware issue...I downloaded daemon mountain tools and created 3
virtual drives...and xp had the same issue.

P.P.S. I'm running windows xp SP3 professional edition.

Try this:
1. Click Start / Run / Notepad c:\CDReg.bat{OK}
2. Allow the new file to be created when prompted.
3. Copy and paste the lines below into this notepad session.
@echo off
reg query
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
> c:\test.txt

notepad c:\test.txt
(Warning: Line 2 is a very long line. It starts with "reg" and ends with
".txt"!)
4. Save and close the file.
5. Click Start / Run / c:\CDReg.bat{OK}
6. Paste the text you see into your reply.

For your information: Here is what I get from my own WinXP SP3 machine:

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Class REG_SZ CDROM

EnumPropPages32 REG_SZ MmSys.Cpl,MediaPropPageProvider

NoInstallClass REG_SZ 1

Re: cd-rome drive not working, error message here

In the Device Manager, right click on the CD Drives and select Uninstall,
right click on the computer name icon, and click on Search for New
Hardware... the system should auto install the drives with the most
appropriate drivers. If this doesn't work, proceede to next step.

In the Device Manager, right click on the CD Drives and select Uninstall,
turn off the computer and check the digital connections to the cd drives, if
they are IDE, check the jumper configuration, (MA & SL for end and middle of
the IDE belt cable)... turn the computer on and check the BIOS to see if it
recognizes the CD-Roms, and boot up the computer, and wait a few minutes for
Windows XP to auto-instal the drives.

If this doesn't work either, you may need to delete the "UpperFilters" &
"LowerFilters" values as indicated in the KB314060 article, and restart the
computer... Back up the registry key before you delete the values. (to
backup; Right click\Export).
