Having fought off attempts of WindowsUpdate to automatically install SP3 on
our laptop, I find that Update still tells me the update is downloaded and
ready to install. Where is it, and what is its file name?

Cheers,

S

It's not clear cut but if you have the time to read this article,
in it I tell your where Windows Update downloads the file to
and when, along with the entire process from start to finish.

The better solution would be to just manually download and run the
update. This has been bantered around a lot since April.

Re: Where is SP3 downloaded to?

Why fight it? It will repair problems as it installs. Installation problems are rare.

Re: Where is SP3 downloaded to?

I don't want - right now - to be taking the necessary backing up procedures
before risking the new package on an old machine with very limited space.
There are also plenty of problems in the windows update group (which I only
thought of after posting here), which would indicate that common sense would
dictate that the update should not just be allowed to get on with it.

Do you know where the package downloads to and what its filename?

Thanks JS, but that link doesn't open for me, load bar just freezes 1/3 way

Tested the link, works OK for me, but you can also go to
the home page and find the article from there.

If you still have problems let me know so I can contact

Re: Where is SP3 downloaded to?

No, this end 'pagestart' is not liked.
I thought it might be Avast's 'Web Scanner' that had taken a dislike to it,
but even with that turned off, the load bar is very slow, and that usually
means there is either something broken or huge in the page.

Cheers anyway.

For what it's worth, the page loads just fine for me in Firefox. Nothing
large to download, hardly any pictures, and just a few links.

Re: Where is SP3 downloaded to?

This is the info from Windows Updates.
Windows XP Service Pack 3 (KB936929)

How to Uninstall
This software update can be removed via Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel.

I did go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and deleted the (Windows XP
Service Pack 2) file. Then I went to Start/Search, typed SP3 and removed all
files with that name. I hope this answers your question.

Re: Where is SP3 downloaded to?

Right JS,

The link is working today, so presumably there were some local problems on
the web or with my ISP.

This looks like a very comprehensive analysis of SP3 and its installation
process, but unfortunately, I now find that many of the text panels truncate
the text by several words on the right hand side, and have no slider bars.
Unfortunately, this includes chopping off the file names I was looking for!
Still, there is a lot there that I can read, and it would be handy to have a
complete version to read, to help me clear unnecessary files and free up
space in addition to explaining the process.

Cheers,

S

Re: Where is SP3 downloaded to?

Thanks Emm,

I had not actually installed the pack, I just wanted to know where the
installation package had gone when it was downloaded, and to remove it to
ensure that any other user does not install it before I have made sure there
is enough space, and that I have cleaned and backed up the system/hard drive
first. I will have a look at Add/Remove out of interest though, and the
Pagestart.com article noted above reminds me that Belarc is also a handy way
of checking.

Cheers,

S
