Roaming Profiles and redirected folders

We have been using roaming profiles and redirected folders for awhile and we
are noticing some serious slowness when a person goes to log into their
machines. After you type in your password the message saying, "Loading your
personal settings" is on the screen for a good 4-5 minutes before it changes
to "Applying your personal settings". What can I do to troubleshoot this?
Does it have anything to do with my roaming profiles or redirected folder
setup? I created 3 shares on my server. One share is
\\server_name\Profiles\ for my roaming profiles. I have the offline setting
on this share set to, "Files or programs from the share will not be
available offline". My second share is \\server_name\desktops for my
desktops. I have the offline settings for this set to, "Only the files and
programs that users specify will be available offline." My third share is
\\server_name\MyDocs for my redirected My Documents. The offline settings
for this share are also set to, "Only the files and programs that users
specify will be available offline." I see that there is another offline
option that states, "All files and programs that users open from the share
will be automatically available offline" it also has a check box saying,
"Optimized for performance". Should I be using that setting instead for all
3 of my shares?

I think I have read somewhere that this could be a DNS issue also, but I
don't really think that is the case.

can you trying by creating a fresh user ? If it's still so slow with an
empty profile, that's something else (dns...)
any eventlog error entry ?

Ok I created a new user and set him up the same way. He does log on much
quicker then everyone else. More assumption is because this user really has
nothing in his profile yet, but as it grows that is when the logon process
takes longer. Am I correct in this assumption? Any recommendations for
cleaning my profiles? Or is my problem elsewhere?

If it's really quick, it's not due to bad configuration/setup.

Now you have to digg on the profile size, fragmented filer...

How big are your profiles ?
any offline sync folder?

My profile is 3.6 GB which is huge I know. My Mydocs is a Offline folder
and also my desktop is. I don't have my profile setup for offline.

Looks like the Application Data folder which is what is hidden in my profile
has all the data in it. Now I just need to figure out what belongs and
doesn't belong.

You may remove the automatic offline sync, and instead choose folder by
folder the needed one offline

Ok, now I am getting somewhere. I see a Adobe folder in there and it is the
folder that is housing all my 3.6 GB data. Wonder if I need this folder. I
have the Adobe Master Suite loaded on my system.

Do you know what the Offline setting for a Roaming Profile is suppose to be
set to?

you mean the offline setup on the roaming profile share ? it's useless.

Roaming profile is synced with the local copy on log on and log off by
windows based on the modification date. It's not using the offline folder
for this part.

You shouldn't have it on redirected folder (application data) if used,
because it break the goal with redirected folder (not having a sync copy).

Can you explain more what you mean by, "You shouldn't have it on redirected
folder (application data) if used,
because it break the goal with redirected folder (not having a sync copy)."

I am not using Offline files on the Profile. I have that turned off. My
Roaming profile is not setup as redirected folder using a Group Policy. I
go to the Profile tab in the Users Properties in AD Users and Computers and
set the path to \\server_name\Profiles\%username%.

Ok my Offline settings on the server for the Profile share have always had
offline sync turned off, but that Application Data folder resides in the
roaming profile folder. How do you set that to not sync the Application
Data folder?

You can manualy exclude the application data from the roaming profile, but
that break the roaming profile.
Or you may just exclude this adobe folder which seems to be the problem.

Don't mess up, the redirected folder are specific in GPO, if you didn't set
it explicitly, you can ignore my comments on redirected folder & offline
sync.

You may try to simply purge the adobe folder. What does it contain to be so
big ?

through the Users Profile in AD Users and Computers on their profile tab how
do you tell it there to exclude certain folders?

You have to create a GPO:

USER
Administrative Templates\
System\
User Profiles
Exclude directories in roaming profile

Lets you add to the list of folders excluded from the user's roaming
profile. This setting lets you exclude folders that are normally included
in the user's profile.

I would prefer to really correct the origin, the adobe folder. This is a
workaround

Any idea how big the profile should be? I got mine down to 200MB and it
still takes awhile to log on and off.

You should not put files on the desktop, better on the MyDocs.

I think the recommendation is 5MB, and 25MB max.
The profile is intended to be settings, not data. The problem area is the
overlap in things like Adobe thumbnails; Dreamweaver data; dictionaries etc.
It should be possible to get the profile down to 25MB or less by redirecting
all the data. In a few cases (Adobe is one) you may have to dispense with
the roaming profile and leave it local - but do you really want all your
thumbnails roaming?

Re: Roaming Profiles and redirected folders

It is the same on both the local and server. I am running Disk Keeper on my
server so it maintains the fragmentation automatically. Yes We do use the
redirected Desktop, and also MyDocs. Why would the redirected desktop be
any different from the redirected MyDocs?

No I do not want all my Adobe stuff roaming. How can I make it so my Adobe
stuff does not continue to put stuff on the server profile? I have the
profile down to 172MB. How can I get that down to the 5-25MB range?
