There's a process I'm trying to kill and am quite unable to do so. I
go into the Task Manager, hit the End Process button, click 'Yes',
and... nothing happens. I use the command line tools mentioned at
<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457123.aspx>, and
nothing happens. It says all the processes have been killed, but they
still show up when I use tasklist.

I download KILL from <http://www.petri.co.il/
download_free_reskit_tools.htm>, as recommended by <http://
support.microsoft.com/kb/155075>, and after five minutes of just
sitting there, doing nothing, KILL crashes.

Any ideas?

Give Process Explorer a shot.

if it's malware or another
type of infection , then
you're wasting your time.

You might try out taskkill.exe; it's native to XP. Here's a link if you
want some background. I use it to close down progs via batch files when
I start them via batches.
http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/446/xp_kill_windows_process_command_line_taskkill/
I forget which Service Pack it came with. MS seemed to use it for some
ornery shutdown problems they were having.
It's pretty handy & seems to work well. There is also a less powerful
"Kill.exe".

They're located in \windows\system32\
