I am trying to encrypt a file and or document, but when I get to the
"Advnaced Attribues" box to check "encrypt contents to secure data" it is
not avaialbile (lilght grey instead of black)..............I know this may
seem very minor to experts on computers but I simply can't figure it out and
have to send a document encrypted via email............................any
help is appreciated.
thanks

You are using Windows XP home edition. Encryption is only available in the
professional version. In any case, the XP encryption is not designed for
sending documents to a remote computer as the key is specific to your
computer.

For what you require, try a product such as PGP (sadly, no longer free).

Just put the file into an encrypted archive.

7zip does archive encryption, and it is free.

And besides, XP's encryption is only while it's on the disk. As it
comes off the disk, it is decrypted, so it's not a way to send an
encrypted file to someone using normal means. The enc/deenc happens as
it goes to/from the disk in XP.

Yes, that's a good way to do it. Plus, no enc key disks & codes to mess
with. WinZip, which still has a free version can also handle it.

I can't speak for PGP, but as a compatible freeware counterpart GPG is
alive and well. In fact, combined with a Windows front end such as
GPGShell or WinPT, I even prefer it over PGP.
