No windows audio

When I go to Sounds and Audio devices in control panel and click on it,it
comes up. When I click on sounds and click on a sound to play such as dada
the little arrow next to the name doesn't highlight and I can't play the
sound.I don't have windows sounds or Adobe Flash sounds. Everything else is
fine Windows Media player.Rapsody and Quicktime play sounds fine I've tried
the wavemapper procedure ,it was already there, and correct-- and still no
sound
