Updates...

[Mike]

On my XP Pro computer, everytime I shut down, it's installing updates &
tells me not to shut down it will shutdown automatically.
I don't get the option in the shutdown menu to shutdown without installing &
there are times this might run for 4 or more hours!
What's up with that?

You do not say what type of ISP you have, but it sounds like Dial-up. Switch
to cable or DSL.

Hi Mike,

Updates are probably failing and attempting to reinstall again and
again. One frequent cause (if Microsoft Updates are enabled) is that
cabinets in the MSO Cache folder are missing, but that may not be your
issue.

Give this a try. Start, Run, type services.msc and click OK. Then stop
the Automatic Update service (leave Services open). Then, rename the
SoftwareDistribution folder in \Windows and start the Automaic Update
service again to see if it takes care of it. If it still happens
repeatedly, see if any files or registry keys are blocked by using this
utility:

Turn off updates and then you can elect to do them manually.
Or at least set it to notifiy you of updates but don't do anything.
Either way, you control when and what it updates.

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
