xp install help

[big-ell]

hi i have a machine with vista on a sata hdd but i have a second sata hdd and
i want to install xp on it but no matter what i try when booting from disc it
inspects components then goes to blue screen says if you need to install a
third party scsi or raid driver press f6 and stays there and it wont carry on

any advice would be greatly appreiciated

I'm assuming you are booting with the XP CD in the CD-ROM drive. Because XP
does not have SATA drivers you must tell it where to find them; that's done
by using the floppy you have that has the drivers on it and when asked by
the XP install routine you press F6 at the appropriate time and point to the
drivers on the floppy.

at that point you need to press F6 and load the SATA drivers...
but I'd be cautious about installing XP *after* Vista

Hi Jerry,

What if someone doesn't have a floppy drive on their machine? Can these
drivers be loaded via a flash drive or some other method?

Actually XP with SP2 or SP3 does not require additional drivers to recognize
SATA drives.

It sounds like you have a version of XP that has SP1 or lower. If your
version of XP has SP2 or SP3 then it should recognize the SATA drive and
install XP to it. If you do have an older version of XP then use the slip
stream method here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm .

Keep in mind that you will need a boot manager if you plan to install XP
after Vista is already installed. Some BIOS enable you to pick the drive to
boot and display a key or key combo to press during startup. If not you will
need software to enable you to boot the drive of your choice. BootIt NG can
facilitate that. Do a search for it.

Everyone already told you how to install the SATA drivers when Installing
XP.
I am here to tell you that by leaving the Vista HD hooked up during the XP
installation XP will overwrite
the Vista Boot sector and you will only be able to boot into XP. Vista has a
completely different way of doing a Dual Boot.
If your BIOS is capable of displaying the HD boot choice during startup by
means of pushing F? then by all means disconnect the Vista
HD and then Install XP onto the other HD.
If your BIOS is not capable of that you would need to enter the BIOS each
time you boot and choose which HD to boot from.
If you install XP with the Vista drive connected it will not create a dual
boot unless you run the startup repair option from the Vista DVD
after you have XP installed.
Do a google for Vista dual boot and you will see various programs that you
can use to edit the Vista boot sector files.
I prefer the 2 separate HD choices with the F? option on boot...easier to
undo

Hi Xandros,

I did a Window XP repair install on my Dell computer a month ago to fix my
Help and Support using the SP2 Installation CD supplied by Dell.

Although my machine doesn't have RAID, the computer does use the Intel RAID
Bios.

I didn't press the F6 key when prompted to press it if I needed to load
other drivers.

However, about 5 minutes into the Installation, a dialog box popped up and
prompted me for the location of the RAID SATA drivers. I had to navigate to
a place on my hard drive to where the drivers were located in order to
continue with the installation.

Is it because I'm using a Dell XP CD that I had to manually load the SATA
drivers?
