My PC: Windows XP Home Edition

Hello all,

My computer has been suffering with lots of errors lately (last few weeks),
errors with sys fader/runtime errors/low on virtual memory ect.... Also
windows update website wouldn't load last night and I couldn't see what
custom updates were available.

So I thought, the best thing to do, would be to system restore my PC to an
earlier date. When I click to open System Restore though, now it doesn't load
up ? What is happening, and how can I get my system restore to open up as it
always has done in the past ?

I desperatley await some some help or advice (pleeease)

Regards,

Miss. Caroline Thom

Reboot your computer
and hit F8 just before the OS loads

then select safe mode

see if system restore works

if not, try hitting F8 and select last known good configuration

Re: System Restore won't open - i need help ?

Hi philo,

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

I tried the safe mode thing, but system restore still wouldn't open up. So I
have done last known good configuration. This may help my PC in many ways,
but for some reason system restore just doesn't open up. When I click the
system restore icon it seems to load for one moment and then nothing happens.

I wonder if anyone has any more ideas of how I can get my system restore
back.

Regards,

Caroline x

It might be that the malware infestation doesn't want you to restore to a
time before it took control of your machine.

I doubt that Windows System Restore will help you, but it's certainly
worth a try.

If a person can't get System Restore (which more or less only affects
registry settings) to work, it's usually because a program is
interfering with it, such as Norton or Kaspersky. Here's more
information:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srfail.html

Assuming System Restore doesn't work, you need to give us more
information. That means complete text of the errors. Posting the
complete text of any pertinent error messages in Event Viewer would be
helpful, too:

Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer

If you come across a recent error, double-click on it and click on the
Copy button (upper right-hand corner below the down arrow button). Then
you will be able to paste that information in your next post.

Also, please let us know more about your PC. What is the make and model?
How much RAM do you have? What are your settings for Virtual Memory? How
large is the hard drive and how much free space is on it? What is the
malware status of your PC? What anti-malware programs do you use, and
are you certain they are up to date? What Service Pack level are you at?
Since this seems to be a recent issue, what significant changes have
occurred lately?

Your problem is you don't have enough RAM installed. Either let us know
what the make and model of your PC (or motherboard) is or visit one of
these sites to determine what brand/type of RAM you need:

http://www.kingston.com/

http://www.crucial.com/

Two sticks of 256 MB RAM should be enough. To get a ballpark idea of how
much RAM you need, try the following:

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and click the Performance tab. Then
note the three values under Commit Charge (K): in the lower left-hand
corner: Total, Limit, and Peak.

The Total figure represents the amount of memory you are using at that
very moment. The Peak figure represents the highest amount of memory you
used since last bootup. If both these figures are below the value of
Physical Memory (K) Total, then you probably have plenty of RAM.
Otherwise, you may want to explore this further by running Page File
Monitor for Windows XP:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_pagefilemon.htm

By the way, almost always you should allow Windows to manage the size of
your pagefile:

Right-click on My computer and select Properties. Go to the Advanced tab
and click on Settings (under Performance). Change to Advanced, hit
Change and select the target drive for your virtual memory file. Click
the circle next to System Managed Size and click Set, then OK.
