Issue:
Clicking on start menu after windows login "sometimes" shows blank icons in the Start menu.
Affects:
Have noticed this issue on clean installs of Windows 10 v1803 Professional and Enterprise ISO installs from the MS VLC.
Also seen this affect on Windows devices that "never" had the issue on old versions of Windows 10 (1511,1607,1703,1709) that "successfully upgraded to 1803" and now has this random issue.
Workaround:
End Task from taskmgr "ShellExperienceHost.exe". Then re-click on the Start Menu and your icons should look better.
or
Click on the Action Center - Click Tablet Mode - and you can see the icons be re-drawn. Click on Tablet Mode again to come out of it. Icons should now be fine for this windows session only.
How to replicate the issue:
Click on start as soon as you login to Windows where processing time is high. And you can see the icons sometimes trying to be drawn. Other times when you repeat this test there will be no issue. This happens as well on clean OS install with no other apps
installed. But like I say it doesn't always happen. Loading more apps to the PC like an antivirus or some Enterprise software, or connecting/signing into OneDrive, causes more CPU Time at windows login and the issue is more easier to replicate.
Also you might find sometimes its only one or two icons that have the blank look. And other times it can be completely different icons. There seems to be no rule or logic what causes them to not show the correct Icon thumbnail. The only thing I see is that
it happens when CPU time is High or something is loading at the same time as you are clicking start. It feels like the Start menu at this moment is fighting to load... it draws some of the icons.. then times out/gives up and leaves the other icons with the
"blank look".
My Question to the community....
Has any one in an Enterprise Environment experienced this issue too? We are seeing it a lot at my company (20,000 users). And I also see it happen on some of my home computers too which is Store bought and using Windows 10 1803 Professional. I have never
come across this in the previous version of Windows 10.
Kind regards
Allan
