Hello,

i'm troubleshooting a network running two domains one domain with a dc
running windows server 2003, and one domain running 2000 server. i have many
problems with the users and one of the servers running 2000 server, many
computers in the network when i try to login it takes like 15 minutes, and
the 2000 server machine takes like 30 minutes to start after reboot. when i
check the event viewer in the 2000 server machine i have an error every 3 or
5 minutes:
"windows cannot determine the user or computer name. return value (1908)"
and the source is Userenv. how can i trobleshoot this error?

how can i fix the connection problem with the pc's in the 2003 domain

I have a

Re: application log error

Hello Michael,

Just to clarify, you talk about 2 different domains with different domain
names like test.com and whatever.com? Or 2 domain controllers one with server
2000 and one with server 2003?

Long login times often happen if DNS is configured incorrect, for example
the machines are configured to go to a Internet DNS provider instead of the
domain DNS server fomr the internal domain. So please give a short description
about the DNS configuration on the network.

Re: application log error

HI Meinolf,

The confiuration that i have here is a little strange, i had a domain
controller in our old network running 2000 when they change the network they
setup the new network with 2003 servers, the old domain controller was
running many things like isa 2000, mail server, iis, dns and other
applications. the domain still there because there are some pc that need to
be connected to that domain for the application that they are running, but
now i have no active directory in that domain.

the other domain is 2003 server based, with a domain controller with active
directory and dns, the db server with iis and sql server, an antivirus pc.

both dns are independent as i see, there is no link between one and the
other, this can be one of the problems>

Re: application log error

Hello Michael,

Sorry but you are really confusing me. Again 2 domains like whatever.com
and another.com? One of them is 2000 domain without any Domain controller?
And the other is 2003? You have clients in both domains on one physical network
with using the same ip range? So how are the clients configured and how can
users login the 2000 domain when theire is no domain controller?

Best regards

Re: application log error

Hi Meinolf,

I know is strange, look as far as i know, when they bringh the new servers
for the network the guys here set the servers with 2003 and the dc in one of
them (domain.com) but before we had a 2000 server as a dc with active
directory and a lot bt really a lot of different services in the same
machine, the ip range was 10.34.1.x, jsut now i know that they tried to
downgrade the domain controller to stan alone server for some services in the
server, and for one reason that i don't know they cudn't downgrade the
server. i have 2 pc's using this domain and i really dont understand how they
can get connected.

i can try to downgrade the server to make it an stan alone server, unistall
the dns and the isa server that its installed bu not in use. then i'll try to
put it under the domain that we are using now. Do you think that procedure
will create a problem with the mail server that is running in this machine
also.

anyway i'll make a system state backup just in case?

if you have any idea please let me know, this server is gicing me hard time

thanks for the help.

Re: application log error

Hello Michael,

Seems that you are running to different domains in one physical network?
A new domain with 2003 servers, that's right? And clients in this domain
can login and work with useraccounts created on the 2003 domain controller?

And you have an old domain with one 2000 server which is NOT longer a domain
controller? So if you open the System properties window and go to computer
name, what can you read, a workgroup name or a domain name? And if you open
the run line and type in dsa.msc, what happens on the 2000 machine?

Best regards

Re: application log error

HI Meinolf,

yes you are right that the way the network is running now, if a type dsa.msc
i get
Naming Information Cannot be located Because:
No authority could be conected for authentication.
Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly
configured and is currenlty online.

means that i have a server that can not locate itself, do you think is
possible to add this server to the 2003 domain, the contra here is that in
the network Identification teh properties option is desabled, do you think
that if i type dcpromo in the run line or trying to run the active directory
wizard i can downgrade the server.

Re: application log error

Hello Meinolf,

Checking the system properties, in the network identification i have the
full computer name in the old domain and the note down that the
identification of the computer can not be changed because is a domain
controller, the properties option is not avaliable.

in the computer management, services i have the DNS, IIS, ISA (disbled), Sql
Server, routing and remote access. as Aplications im running in this machine
MDaemon mail server, A Hotspot and a internet cafe software from Antamedia
and a software for door locks, a lot for only one server for my point of
view. i'll uninstall the isa and sql because is no need to have them, i have
another firewall and another database server DHCP is not running in this
machine, the active directory was removed but the server still thinks that
is a domain controller.

Re: application log error

Hello Michael,

I think theire will not be a really good solution without reinstall, because
something is really messed up on the 2000 server. So i would install the
services and applications you need from it on the 2003 machines and then
if possible, use the database files from the old 2000 to get back the data.
But for the not MS software first you should try to find newsgroups or infos
if it is possible to do it this way.
And even on this level think about preparing an image BEFORE you go to test
around with the 2000 machine, so you have this configuration still available.
Sorry, but i don't have no other additional idea.

Best regards

Re: application log error

Hello Meinolf,

I think the best solution is to format the server and reinstall all the
aplications that we really need, for the moment i just route everything to
the 2003 servers and i have some backups of the 2000 server in a weekend i
will take out the server and rebuild the whole thing.

Thank you very much for all your help, i appriciate your time.

Re: application log error

Hello Michael,

And for the 2003 domain if you have any issues, please post them also. Hopefully
we find solutions for it. What you really should do on the 2003 domain, run
dcdiag and netdiag to check for errors. And also have a look on the event
viewers of your servers to fix all errors and also check the warnings.

Best regards
