I was shutting down and powering off a few servers today and two of them
would not shut down. I tried multiple times but each time they restarted
instead.

What could cause this?

Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown

Hello,

any weird enventlog entry ?
no memory dump ?

Does the eventlog clearly indicate a shutdown or a reboot (if Windows 2003 )
search in the system event log for source USER32, event 1074, information
level

RE: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown

Try to do hard shut down from the power button on the server, if it works
it's a firmware problem related to the m/b.

not at work right now and the server is off but...

I am pretty sure if it crashed, when it came back up and you logged on, it
would have given you an abnormal shutdown occurred error message. Also, when
I did the shutdown, I put the reason as other and gave it a reason and that
showed up in the event viewer.

the way I ended up turning if off was from the power button while in the Bios
screen, if that helps.

Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown

what is the server's hardware (model...) ?

Are they all at the same level of firmware/driver/bios ? same model ?

Re: Server restarts after you choose Shutdown

You may use SUU from dell to ensure your firmware/bios is up-to-date.
The iso can be download from :
http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...&servicetag=&os=WNET&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1

You may use it from cd or network share, launching from windows.
It will allow you to update all bios/firmware/driver based on a reference of
known good version from dell.

If it doesn't solve your problem and you have double check it's a shutdown
that was done, then you may open a call to dell.
