I have windows 98se. Dell XPST450 came with Adobe Photo Delux Business Edition. I
bought Adobe Photo Delux Home Edition. Everything has been fine. Today I downloaded a
free, recommended by c-net picture editor that didn't work well for me so I
uninstalled it.
Then when I opened a picture I got a message "cannot find the file
C:\...............jpg (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are
correct and that all required libraries are available." but the picture would come
up anyway.

So I uninstalled Photo deluxe Home Edition and Photo deluxe Business Edition and
re-installed Home Edition with the CD. I am still getting the same error message and
all pictures that I created with the Business Edition are gone (empty folders). I can
not find the original cd for the Business Edition.\

IS THERE A "GO BACK" or "System Restore" to a previous date to fix my problem?
PLEASE HELP.

IF you haven't defragged, scandisked, or downloaded or moved around a bunch
of files, you MIGHT be able to recover SOME of your files/pictures by using
recovery software.
HOWEVER, the more you use that computer, the more file corruption,
over-write you will encounter.

Testdisk comes with Photorec which can recover your files, or Active@, or
several other programs are available, both free and paid.

As for recovering Photo Deluxe Business, not likely, but that also might be
recoverable ONLY if you also have a backup registry with the required reg
entries...AND the disk has not had much activity.

Hi MEB,

It's been so long since I've used W98, I don't recall--would SCANREG
/RESTORE work here for that?

Re: go back?

No, not to recover the files. But it might help recover the application if
these problems occurred in the last five days. You'll want to save copies of
all RBxxx.CAB files from the folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP (it's a Hidden
folder, so make sure Hidden Files and folders are made visible using Folder
Options.)

Re: go back?

No.
That will only restore a previous registry and win.ini/system.ini

No other files are restored, so no files making up the uninstalled programs would be
restored, nor the data files (in this case the pics). Only the Registry entries
would be restored with the Registry, which won't accomplish anything useful here.

Note that for the RB backups to be of any use, the entire set of program
files for the app must also be recovered intact.

No need for the Registry restore if s/he has the installer. It's my

Re: go back?

I have the CD for Adobe Home Edition. ...I used it to re-install. However, I still
get this pesky error message. I close the message and my picture is there in the Home
edition.
The error message says at the end .."make sure the path and filename are correct and
that all required libraries are available." How do I do that?

Re: go back?

Sorry to say that I don't have the answer. I'd see if Adobe has anything to
say about it. Other than that, I guess I'd be diving into the Registry to
find a problem entry left behind by the Business version. Not something I
can easily explain or lead you through.

Re: go back?

Nice to see you here Bill. Are you still stuck on using Internet Explorer 5.
<grin>
BTW, s/he has the option of doing backups to flash drives or on cds if the
user has a cd or dvd burner in the future to prevent problems. A second
option is to use a program like GoBack by Roxio. It is now a Norton product
and installed with a bunch of other programs but if you get an older version
of GoBack by Roxio before Norton/Symantec had bought it then it was quite
good. Unfortunately, it became more useless in the hands of Symantec like
all their products become in my opinion.

I still remember back in October of 2006 when my dad was locked out of XP
Professional. Somehow a BIOS password had been installed and he could not
access XP Professional. He had to format the drive and now keeps backups
regularly about every 2 weeks instead of every month like he had previously
done.

Re: go back?

Yes, Dan. I knew it was you a few days ago. You're hard to miss. As for
names, I'm fine with whatever someone wants to call themselves (unless it's
false advertising). If they also choose to be gender neutral, I have no
problem with that, either.
