I posted over at Microsoft Answers but I think the problem might be more complicated than I initially assumed.
I'm running Windows 10 Pro build 16299.248 with a local admin account (no password). I can also provide hardware specs but suspect they are unnecessary.
History: In January (possibly right after an update, but I can't be positive) my lock screen slideshow stopped appearing. Instead, it shows a screen with just my accent color. No clock, no notifications, just a solid color. When you click on it, it acts as normal and goes to the sign in screen. I thought it would go away after an update but it did not. I tried simple things, like removing the slideshow image folders and re-adding them, no luck. The kicker was that every once and a while, it suddenly worked. Then, next time the computer was inactive, not working again. --I should have been writing this down but I didn't think it would get complicated-- I don't actually remember if it happened only after I restarted or if it randomly worked after days of running. After trying to fix it the last week, I have noticed that usually it works the first time or so after the computer is restarted. This is what I have tried:
Checked to see if the folders are indexed. They are.
Windows Search service is running.
Moved the folders from second hard drive to first hard drive.
Turned on/off setting "Only use pictures that fit my screen".
Tried a trick where you set the lock screen image to a single picture and then switch back to slideshow -- it wouldn't display a single picture either.
SFC & DISM image restore health.
Deleted LockScreenSlideshow folder in AppData.
Registry fix for corrupted user profile -- set RefCount to 0, that one (I'm not sure it even works on Win 10)
I also looked through the event viewer and couldn't find any helpful corresponding event.
After consulting with someone at Microsoft Answers, I created a new user profile. First time around, I created a limited access one and didn't do anything to the account except set up the slideshow. It worked for that evening (now I'm not sure I left it long enough). So then I created a new admin profile with the intention of migrating data and settings. I did not set up the slideshow first thing (assuming something is going to work hurts you in the long run) but after I had moved some data, adjusted the start menu, a few other things, I left it overnight, and the next day . . . the slideshow is not working. Now it's showing a single photo (still no clock or notifications) which after looking into it was because the setting "Show Lock Screen Background Image on Sign In Screen" was turned on when I had it off on the other account. If I turn it off, solid color again.
I haven't looked into Group Policy settings because I haven't used any on this PC as of yet so whatever went wrong is probably not there, although if there is a solution for the problem using Group Policy, I'm fine with suggestions. Sorry this is so long! Any help would be appreciated.
