My old (now broken) laptop had been successfully using File History to back up my files to a network drive (mapped as z. And, from time to time, I was always able to selectively restore files from it. But, while setting up my new laptop, I have completely failed to restore my files from the same backup drive (mapped as z: on the new laptop). The sequence of events is as follows:
1. On the new laptop, go to "Settings"
2. Click "Backup"
3. Click "More Options"
4. Click "See advanced settings"
5. Click "Select drive"
6. Click "Add network location"
7. Click my network drive (mapped as z
8. Drill down to D:\Documents (for example) on the mapped z: drive.
9. Click "Select folder".
But I then just get the following error:
"We can't add your network location."
"This location can't be used to save your files. Try a different location."
Well I've been up and down my mapped z: drive selecting folders at different levels - but I just get the same messages.
The above message in uninformative to say the least - and I have read numerous threads where people can't seem to restore from File History (experiencing numerous different issues).
Is there any official documentation on how to restore ones File History files to a new computer? This surely must be a fundamental part of its design, but it has completely stumped my for three hours now.
