Windows 10 Pin sign in grayed out

I had a pin set up on my surface pro 6 and my computer tried to make me change my pin because my old one had expired--something I didnt want to do, so I instead removed my pin and when I tried to add one later so that I could use my new fingerprint scanning type cover, the options for adding a fingerprint, scanning my face, and adding a pin are all grayed out and I can't add them.
