I have a user who received a new Windows 10 (1903) PC about 2 months ago and as part of her job she regularly burns CDs and DVDs which she had been doing using the Window Explorer built-in Drive Tools. About 2 weeks ago she went to burn a disc and found all the drive tools in the ribbon were grayed out and she could not add anything to the burn list. The drive seems to read discs without issue. I have tried the following

  • Uninstalling all the updates installed after last time she successfully burned (Then reboot)
  • Disabling the device in device manager (then reboot)
  • Uninstalling the device in device manager (then reboot)
  • Repaired the Intel ME driver (then reboot)
  • Updated the Chipset driver (then reboot)
  • Updated BIOS (then reboot)
  • Ran SFC /scannow (which found and repaired error)
  • Reinstalled the Windows updates, as well as all other pending updates (then reboot)
  • Contacted Dell support who replaced the drive, but it continued having the same issue after
  • Installed my copy of Nero and was able to burn a disc with that

User is very much NOT tech saavy and refuses to learn any new process for burning discs. I also wanted to try updating the cd/dvd writer driver and/or the drive's firmware. After doing some research my understanding is that all optical drives in W10 use the same generic driver unless the driver manufacturer provides a different one. Regarding firmware, the drive appears to have no manufacturer marked on the drive itself, and googling the model number I looked up in device manager only returns results for other people with Dell desktops having disc drive issues, but no results for a manufacturer of that model who could theoretically provide a driver or firmware. There are also no optical drive drivers listed on Dell's website when looking up the service tag.
