2 Problems: Why after a repair of XP does Windows Update not install updates?
Why after repairing XP and restoring system state data does Windows Update
report falsely that updates are installed when it appears to me they are not
or Add/Remove Programs cannot locate them in order to uninstall them?

After repairing a Windows XP Professional disk using a Slipstream XP SP2
disc, I finally got back up and running 90%, and Windows Update was showing
like 77 Critical Updates available, but after downloading each of them, they
would fail one after another during the installing phase, and end very fast
just showing a box, with a list of the 77 failed. So, after doing this
several times, I am stumped.
So, then I installed my last Restore Point from a few days ago, and now
Windows Update shows only a few updates available, not the 77 after a Repair.
Anyway, when i go to Add/Remove Programs, I had to remove all the Windows XP
updates listed (part of the 77), because they were NOT uninstalling, just get
an error for each one when I tried to uninstall them. So, my question is,
how to reinstall the Critical Updates (or has my recent Restore of the System
State Data done that for me?). I do not think so, why the errors in
Add/Remove Programs.

Why so difficult after a repair for Windows Updates to install updates
properly?

Re: Windows Update and Repair or Restore Problem

Thanks for you input. However, the first (and only) update Automatic Update
did perform correctly when I first started after the Repair, was what you
suggested:
WindowsUpdateAgent30.exe. Then after restarting, I saw like 77 updates,
they download ok, but do NOT install as described earlier. I have to admit,
I skipped a few files during the Repair process (not sure if this is the
issue, I know thats bad, but at least my PC is starting up, not sure what
that is about, my slipstream SP2 disk or what, several messages about not
being able to locate the file during the Repair process.) I had even
stumbled across the information you gave earlier, and tried to install it
again, and it gives "Not Necessary you already have it" message.

Thanks for your suggestion,
Jonathan

P.S. Why I had to do a repair in the first place: uninstalled Agnitum
Outpost Firewall, restarted, would stop after ntldr, saying Cannot Find the
Specified File, C:\Windows\System32\Config\System, please do a Repair.
Again, I have to admit, I had used Diskkeeper the same day and was messing
with my CPU Overclock settings, ALTHOUGH I HAD RESTARTED A FEW TIMES THAT
DAY, and no problems. I think I had this problem before with overclocking,
but before, I would disable it, and I could restart OK. Maybe some Hard
Drive corruption happened this time. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW, grr to thoughts
of being a hard drive physical thing. My Seagate HD is only 2 years old.
Anyway, it was a battle just getting back, then i got ntldr is missing, no
operating system etc etc. Anyway, copied an old ntldr file and I got back up
and running (no thanks to the Repair Process). Let's not forget the SATAII
drivers during F6 I was not loading the first 4 hours, and crashing Recovery
Console to add to further enjoyment of the Repair Process.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CD.. in Dos means go to the previous directory, but CD<space>.. in Recovery
Console means the same thing. I guess there is a good reason for that too.

Once again: Try installing WindowsUpdateAgent30.exe with parameter
"/wuforce".

RE: Windows Update and Repair or Restore Problem

I have also had ths problem (77 failed)have tried suggestions and get the
same message as you. I thought it was because i am not a pc geek but am glad
to know it appears to be a system problem. I also keep getting a message that
outlook is not installed properly. Cannot find out why either.
