I have recently replaced several PCs, for one particular client, with new PCs running Windows 10 Pro 10.0.18363. All PCs are running Office 2013 (version 15.0.4569.1506) as they also run Business Contact Manager for Microsoft Outlook version 4.0.12929.0.

All users are reporting receiving the error "SearchProtocolHost.exe application error - Application has generated and exception that could not be handled." The error then refers to Process ID and Thread ID and and then gives the user the option to click OK to terminate or Cancel to debug.

It doesn't appear to cause a problem, everything still appears to function, but I want to be sure and to stop the error message from appearing.

I am not sure when the message appears, there is no obvious pattern at this stage.

I have confirmed that the Windows Search service is running, I have rebuilt the index through Index Options in Control Panel, I hae run sfc /scannow, performed a Disk Cleanup and run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth but still the error appears for all users.

I have not seen this for any other client.

Does anybody know what is causing this or how to troubleshoot it?

Kind regards

David Ewer
