I am trying to assist someone who has 2 certificates that they need installed in order to gain access to a government financial website. They are on a machine running. Microsoft Windows 10 Pro and I am trying to export them from that machine.
I have attempted to run mmc as administrator and use the certificates snap-in. After going through the steps to export offered by the export wizard and clicking "Finish", a box pops up with the title "Exporting your private exchange key", and reads "An application is requesting access to a Protected Item". By a text box, it asks for "Password for: CyptoAPI Private Key". I give it the password I made in the beginning of this process and it responds with a pop-up with titled "Decryption error!" and message "Unable to access the Protected item. Please verify that the password you just entered is the correct one." Is the CryptoAPI Private Key a password that was assigned to the certificate at an earlier date which I do not have now, or is this failure due to another underlying cause. Any insight is appreciated.
