I’ve tried to solve a problem with MS tech support 3 times to no avail.
Current System Config – This is a text file. I could send it as an attachment or a print out, but the print out will be several pages. I have several questions and this info may provide you with information that I can’t answer quickly. Let me know how to send it to you. Here is the basic info:
Microsoft Surface Laptop (Gen 1) 64 bit 16 GB memory
Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.19041 Build 19041
Office 2016 – a few applications
OneDrive – 1 TB
Office 365 – a few, I think
Multiple non-Microsoft compliant, compatible programs
I have no formal technical training but I do have some technical knowledge (learned mostly by mistake). I was having several problems with Microsoft applications. I wanted to reinstall my previously purchased original Microsoft full-featured Office 2016 Pro. I wanted to locate files created in 2016 Pro which are no longer accessible in my Office 365 subscription thus inaccessible. I requested help from a chat tech support person. We chatted over 2 hours and he left me with a mess and closed the ticket as solved. My attempts to re-engage have been fruitless. I think part of the problem is that the original installation software key of 2016 is still listed as an install. This is on my previous computer associated with that computer’s credentials. I purchased the Surface Laptop 1 and installed it there. Then, I decided to try O-365 for it’s cloud services. (I don’t know why.) Apparently, the original battery began to expand and my computer was replaced by Microsoft. I believe the re-installation of my MS programs was the start of my current situation. I am trying to return my computer to the MS Office 2016 Pro full featured installation. Considering that objective:
I think that’s a pretty good synopsis of the history. If I’m unclear just ask me “dummie” questions. Can anyone help me accomplish this goal? Although I’m not a “trained” tech, I can follow clear directions. PLEASE? Any questions you have for me, I’ll try to answer or ask for further questions. Thanks so much!

- I think a clean install of Win 10 Pro would be best. Do you agree?
- Then I think a clean reinstall of MS Office 2016 Pro would allow me to recover and access the files I’ve lost. Do you agree?
- My purchase of O-365 Home/Student was based on the need to access my files remotely. However, I couldn’t access all of the applications unless I purchased the desktop versions - which I had already purchased with MS Office 2016 Pro and were running on my 1st Surface Laptop.
