Massive Service Failure

I have a 2003 SP1 application server that is very unhappy right now... (It
has been running for about two years without any incident, and there has been
no changes other than Windows Updates.)

When booting up the server, I now get the message that says at least one
service failed to start, and I should check the event log... However, all of
the event logs fail to display because my Event Log service will not run.

When I look at my services, I have a large number that will not start. Most
complain that the dependency service or group failed to start. If I view the
properties of the service and try to look at the dependency tab, I again get
the message that the dependency service or group failed to start, otherwise
no dependency services are listed.

The services that are failing are:

COM+ Event System
Computer Browser
DDEmgr Datasource
Distributed File System
Event Log
File Replication Service
Logical Disk Manager Client Services
Net Logon
Offline Processing Service
Performance Logs and Alerts
Print Spooler
Protected Storage
Remote Connection
Server
System Event Notification
Task Scheduler
Windows Management Instrumentation
Windows Task Manager
Time
Workstation

I can only assume that I have a problem with one of the above services that
in turn is causing the rest to fail. (domino effect?) However, since I do
not have an Event log to view, I have no idea which service to start working
on first. Any advice on where to start (other than reload the OS).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Massive Service Failure

Did you apply the windows 2003 Service pack 2 through Windows Update ?

Re: Massive Service Failure

Hi Scott O,

Have you tried viewing the event log remotely through another
machine's Computer Management Console? (Logged on as Domain Admin
right-click MyComputer select Manage, right-click the Computer Management
(Local) and select Connect to Another Computer, then type in the address of
your problem server.)

Re: Massive Service Failure

Not prior to the problem... I did attempt to load it after the problem,
hoping that it would somehow fix the issue... However the service pack will
not install.

Re: Massive Service Failure

Just tried that, and get the message that "Computer \\MyServerName cannot be
managed. Windows cannot find the network path."

My hopes of this being resolved peacfully are starting to fade.

Re: Massive Service Failure

Well, it was worth a try. :-)

Since you said this was an out of the blue occurance, you should prob run a
run a virus & spyware scan via http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/ as well
as a checkdsk. Have you tried booting and safe mode to see if you can view
the event log? Also you could try booting into Last Good Config.
