McAfee sticks around!

When I look in my Vista Security area there are still 2 references to McAfee -

Under the firewall, it says both McAfee and Defender are both on.

Under Virus scan, it says both McAfee and Defender are both on and the
McAfee is out of date.

I have not ever installed McAfee, and I have even run the MCPR2.exe McAfee
"cleaner" that is supposed to remove all registry entries of McAfee.

Any suggestions???

McAfee came installed on my new Dell running Vista Ultimate.
I removed it after many problems.
I've done the MCPR nonsense. Fix the stupid uninstall program already.

The problem is that Windows Security Center, clever thing that it is,
insists that both McAfee Viruscan and McAfee Firewall are present and
functioning. I guarantee you, they are not. Anybody know how to clean this
up?

Suggestions are much appreciated.

Right-click Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Type the following
command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository [enter]

If the system returns "WMI repository is not consistent", run this command:

winmgmt /salvagerepository [enter]

The first time you run this it will fail. It will issue stop commands
to the services causing it to fail. It might take a couple minutes for
the services to shut down. Run the command again. You actually may
have to run it 3 times before it finally runs and completes on its own.
Reboot your system.

If the above doesn't work or you get "WMI repository is consistent", do
the following from an elevated cmd prompt:

net stop winmgmt [enter]
cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem [enter]
ren repository repository.old [enter]
net start winmgmt [enter]

Thank you Malke, that did the trick! I did get the "WMI repository is
consistent" message, so I did have to follow the second set of instructions.
But that finally worked!

Thanks Again.

You're most welcome. I'm glad that sorted it for you. Thanks for taking
the time to let me know.

Re: McAfee sticks around!

Malke you are brilliant. I have been searching for a fix to this dilemma
for what seems forever. The McAfee tech support people were hopeless,
they had no clue what I was talking about. There were others over on an
MSDN Blog that had the same issue with McAfee, Norton and some others. I
am so glad I have been playing around with the Tafiti search beta and
just happened to try the news section and wham there's the answer.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate people like yourself sharing
their knowledge. Cheers. T

Re: McAfee sticks around!

Hi Mike,

The uninstall tools that McAfee have do not do a complete job and do
not deal with the 2 firewall issue at all. I tried all of the tools
they sent to me and then ran through the registry and found a fair
number of McAfee entries that had not been cleared away.

It's a shame that uninstall tools never seem to get rid of the complete
programs, this applies for a great number of software companies and not
just security ones.

Thank you in any case for posting the information it is greatly
appreciated.

Cheers.

Re: McAfee sticks around!

Thanks a lot Malke, your solution did solve my security center problem.

But there is another problem no one talks about :

After uninstalling McAfee, each time I start my computer Vista execute
all the .msi packages it finds !!!

I can see that in my event log wich is full of 11708 and 1033 events at
each startup, saying : Windows Installer installed the product... for
each product installed on my computer.

Does anyone knows how to stop that ?

Regards,

Re: McAfee sticks around!

btimore, this sounds like a rather intriguing situation. Can you tell me
which log files your looking at in particular. It seems I have one msi
popping up like this but I'd like to check to see if there are any
others that have gone un-noticed and see if I can track back the
situation.

I really am hoping I am not running into the same wall you are, sorry,
but it would sure be nice to hear any kind of information regarding
such activities.

Cheers

Re: McAfee sticks around!

Hi Pretentious,

I speak about the Windows Event Log - Application Log (Right-click My
Computer then Manage).

I have this situation on two Dell computers I recently bought, Vista
French Edition.

After Uninstalling McAfee, each time I start the computer, I can see in
the Event Log many events number 1033, 1035 and 11708.

They are information events, and the computer seems to work ok.

These events are all related to MsiInstaller and there is at least one
event for each Software installed in the computer; actually about 90
events.

It is like if Windows wants to start each .msi package it finds !

Event 1035 says (trnslated from French) :
Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name : XXXX.
Product version : YYYY. Product Language : 1033. Success of the
reconfiguration or Error Status : 0.

Where XXXX is the name of the product (for example : OutlookAddinSetup,
Dell Quickset, Roxio Creator Audio...)

There is no need for this products reconfigurations !!!

I rebuilt completely one of the computers with the Dell system disk
without installing McAfee and I do not have these events.

I hope you can understand my English, as I am French !

Regards,

Re: McAfee sticks around!

btimore, your English is just fine. I have one program that seems to get
re-installed every time Windows Vista reboots and am now taking a look
at the log events to see what they have to say. I haven't found exactly
the same situation you're describing but will keep digging. Should you
run across an answer it would be great to have it posted here.

Cheers.

Re: McAfee sticks around!

I solved my problem today !

I used the Dell restore function to get my computer back to the state
Dell gave it to me.

I started it without any Internet connection to see if McAfee was
there; it was.

I then did a shutdown, started it in Safe mode and uninstalled McAfee.

I started it in normal mode and the MsiInstaller messages did not show
in the Windows events log.

I did different Windows update and software installation which required
a computer restart without any strange MsiInstaller events in the Log.

So I think the computer is Ok.

Note 1 : When I start the computer, it tells me that there is no
anti-virus software installed; so the problem at the beginning of this
thread is also solved !

Note 2 : That was on my Dell Laptop. I wanted to do the same thing on
my other Dell computer (Desktop), but the Dell restore procedure did
never work and I had to reinstall Vista manually.

Hope that helps :)
