I am running WindowsXP Home Edition and Internet Explorer 7 with all of the
updates up through July 2007. My problem started after the July Microsoft
update.
I downloaded and installed the July updates. After the updates were
installed, my computer restarted itself. It would get past the WindowsXP
logo screen but not quite to the "Welcome" screen. The computer would not
boot, but would simply go into a loop where it would not boot up, not even
in safe mode. I would get a message that there had been some sort of
problem, and asking if I wanted to go to the last known configuration that
worked, or boot into safe mode, etc. Nothing worked. The only way to boot up
was to put my WindowsXP CD in, and have the computer boot from the CD.
I booted from the the CD and did a repair install. Then I ran a virus check,
ran several spyware programs looking for any spyware that might be around,
ran sfc /scannow, did a disk cleanup, and ran a defrag program. Then I went
back to the Microsoft Update site and downloaded all of the updates. Again
it went through the download and install process. This took quite some time
as you can imagine. When the install was completed, the computer restarted
itself. Again, the computer would not boot up, but went into the same loop
as before. I had to do another repair install in order to boot up.
This where I am now. At this point, I am afraid to do another download and
install for fear that I will not be able to boot up again, and will
encounter the "looping" problem, and then go through the tedious repair
install routine.
I have been reading the threads in this newsgroup trying to get a clue as to
where to go to find out what my problem might be that would cause this
strange behavior. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I undertake
another download and install process.
Thanks in advance.
