A Samsung insider claims to have all the details about several specs for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone. First up, the idea of the device being available in both metal and plastic versions seems to have been confirmed. This would follow in the footsteps to some degree of Apple and the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s devices, although it remains to be seen whether that will be a winning strategy for Apple. According to this same source, the metal version of the Galaxy S5 will come with a metallic back plate with metal on the sides and front. It is unknown whether the metal version will get a different name.
Another area of interest is in the screen where this insider reports the Galaxy S5 will indeed come with a 2560×1440 resolution AMOLED display. We have reported that Samsung was preparing to produce screens capable of that resolution in sizes as small as 5 inches. The screen size for the Galaxy S5 is still not known, but it appears a 5.25-inch screen is the odds-on favorite.
As with past Galaxy S devices, both Exynos and Snapdragon processors will be offered, the difference being whether the device lands in a market where LTE capability is offered. In the case of the Snapdragon, the device should come with the Snapdragon 805 offering noticeable performance improvements over existing devices. If a market gets the Exynos version it will be the Exynos 6 with 64-bit support. The Galaxy S5 is expected to come with Android 4.4 KitKat preloaded. A 16MP camera should be included, but no word yet on whether optical image stabilization will make its way into the device.
While the base Galaxy S5 is expected to launch sometime in April after a March announcement, the Samsung insider also indicates Samsung will be producing a Galaxy S5 mini and a Galaxy S5 Zoom. These models are expected to hit the market in May or June following the initial release of the Galaxy S5.
Are you looking forward to the Galaxy S5 or are you waiting on some other device for a possible purchase in 2014?
