The NPD Group and Connected Intelligence released their latest Connected Home Report today showing U.S. smartphone market penetration grew to 62% during the fourth quarter of 2013, up from 52% for the same period in 2012. The data also showed that Apple and Samsung were doing the best job at capitalizing on this growth as the two giants saw their share of the market grow from 57% to 68%. For Apple, the increase year to year was from 35% to 42% while Samsung grew from 22% to 26%. The only other manufacturer that saw positive growth in their share of the market was LG, although their share was still in the single digit range. Meanwhile, manufacturers like Motorola, HTC and Blackberry all saw their piece of the pie shrink relative to the others.
The NPD Group also noted that data usage increased from 5.5 GB per month to 6.6 GB per month on average from Q4 2012 to 2013. They attribute much of this growth in data usage to streaming music services like Pandora and iHeart Radio. Other services like Spotify, TuneIn Radio and Slacker Radio saw growth during the past year and only added to the usage numbers.
When TalkAndroid announced their picks for best smartphone of 2013, Samsung’s only device to make the list was the Galaxy Note 3. Several of us noted that devices from manufacturers like LG, Motorola and even HTC were strong contenders to make a dent in the market, but the question remained as to whether any of these could crack the Apple/Samsung juggernaut. This new data from the NPD Group reveals what a huge task that will be with only LG showing any signs of possible success.
