The issue of diabetes is growing and will continue to grow in the future. As there is no immediate cure in sight, the best we can do is find better ways to monitor glucose levels to better treat the disease.
Google X has something pretty good in mind.
The secret Google lab is currently in talks with the FDA to research and develop a possible smart contact lens that would monitor glucose levels in human tears. This would be of huge importance to diabetics, and would no longer require diabetics to prick their finger to prick their fingers and test drops of blood periodically throughout the day.
Here’s some more information from Google from a blog post:
We’re also investigating the potential for this to serve as an early warning for the wearer, so we’re exploring integrating tiny LED lights that could light up to indicate that glucose levels have crossed above or below certain thresholds. It’s still early days for this technology, but we’ve completed multiple clinical research studies which are helping to refine our prototype. We hope this could someday lead to a new way for people with diabetes to manage their disease.
Google admits that there is a lot more work to do, but is currently looking for partners to work with on this extensive project.
