| Using Thunderbird i get two messages when sending a message
| fails. The first 'Send Message Error' with possible causes and
| suggestions '.. unavailable or being refused .. please verify ..
| settings ..', then a second 'Alert' simply stating 'Connection to
| sever %news-server% timed out.'.
I know you also have avast! installed. Here is something of interest,
though it was a different error message (Socket Error: 10061). Can you
access the Properties of "%news-server%"...?...

.......Quote of AckAck................
Before I comment on this thread, I would like to thank the creators of
Avast for a great product and for making it free for those who cannot
afford it.
With reference to the error message when downloading emails - I was
having the same problem. I checked out the account configuration and
realised that one of the settings gets "corrupted" sometimes. The POP
and SMTP settings are always correct (127.0.0.1) but what changes is the
account name:
Instead of being:
email#pop.isp.com
It sometimes changes to:
email#127.0.0.1
That's when the problem arises - and it happens all of a sudden, I check
my email and everything is fine - 15 minutes later I check again and I
get this error message, I the have to go into the account configuration
to re-type the correct info to get it to work. I have Avast installed
for about a week but the problem has only started today.
.......EOQ of AckAck...................
AckAck spoke of the POP3 server Properties. But I have reason to believe
it may also apply to the news server too-- but I don't want to revisit
my own recent horror story! For me, I get to that this way...
""OE, Tools menu, Accounts, News tab, msnews.microsoft.com, Properties
button"
...., & the Account Name field is found in the Server tab. Here is my
whole Server tab...
Server tab...
1. Server name: 127.0.0.1
2. This server requires me to log on: Checked
3. Account Name: #msnews.microsoft.com
4. No password.
5. Remember password is checked.
6. Log on using Secure Authentication: Unchecked.
That is what it SHOULD look like after avast! gets hold of it. Avast!
appends that number sign (#) to the front of the name in the Account
Name box, & I do believe it changed the Server Name to what you see
there. That Account name seems to be the same as the News Account name
in the General tab...
General tab...
1. News Account: terabyteunlimited.com
2. Name: PCR
3. E-Mail Address:
pcrrcp@netzero.net
HOWEVER, my other account has these names in those fields...
General tab...
1. News Account: terabyteunlimited.com
Server tab...
1. Server name: 127.0.0.1
2. Account name: #terabyteunlimited.com:1198
If that doesn't cure it, maybe report back with all of the Properties
settings in all tabs.

| My problem is when i try to send (large/long) Usenet messages via
| my regular news service provider (NSP), not via msnews.microsoft.com.
|
| So therefor, eventually, did i change and post using
| msnews.microsoft.com to finally being able to finish up our
| 'Avast! false alarm ...' thread. But i read, and occasionally
| post to, newsgroups outside of the 'microsoft.*' hierarchy not
| carried there.

|
| I've tried different news-clients, same problem, and i've
| [finally] updated to a more current version of Thunderbird, same
| problem. But posting to another news-server, like
| 'msnews.microsoft.com.' with the same settings that fails to my
| normal NSP do work (so far) so i /think/ it is a server-side problem.
The settings are individual per NG. Try to get the other to look like
this one that works.
| This post is quite lengthy, and i'll try posting to my normal
| NSP's server first, but i think i'll have to repost to another
| one to get it out. Now just because i write this it'll probably
| work .. well, we'll see.
It could be that name field intermittantly will revert to being correct,
& it has nothing to do with the size of the post at all.
