In a new interview Acer’s vice president for the corporate business division, Peter Shieh, has revealed Acer is planning to get into the wearable tech market during 2014. According to Shieh, Acer “actually demonstrated our products to some of the company’s clients at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month. The company is still developing certain types of wearable devices. We certainly aim to play a role in the new market.” Shieh did not specify what form the new devices may take. For now, it seems most companies are pushing to get smartwatch type devices onto retail shelves, although a variety of smartglasses are also in development.
Along with the revelation concerning wearable tech, Shieh said Acer is also working on plans to release 4G compatible devices to meet consumer demand. The majority of Acer’s smartphone sales have been with carriers like Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile Co and Far EasTone Telecommunications Co, and Shieh expects that to continue with upward of 90% of sales being with carriers. Acer is able to generate 20 to 30 percent of a smartphone’s sales price in profit when sold to telecom carriers.
The public did not get to see any of the new Acer wearable tech devices at CES 2014, but with the cat out of the bag it may be possible some devices will surface at MWC 2014.
