If you were one of the many users affected by Google’s service outages earlier today, Google wants you to know they’re very sorry. They’ve issued a statement apologizing for the (short) service disruption and detailed exactly what caused the issues. They clarified that the outage affected about 10% of users for roughly 25 minutes at 10:55 am this morning.
Apparently, one of Google’s systems responsible for telling other systems how to behave began sending out incorrect configuration files to those systems. This messed up many Google services that required log-ins like Gmail, G+, and Hangouts, and resulted in the issues we saw today. Even though they were able to get the issue resolved pretty quickly and got everything back in order by 11:30 am, they’re acknowledging the problem and taking steps towards preventing it from ever happening again.
Hey, nobody’s perfect. At least Google is owning up to it. You can read their full statement below.
