Although we see Google branching out into many new areas and products over time, that doesn’t mean they ignore the base of the company, search. Over the years Google has continued to expand the ability of their search engine to respond to queries from users. They have now reached a point where the Google Search engine is able to handle some “complicated” questions.

“Complicated” in this case means questions that may not have a single answer, especially if that answer can change over time. For example, if one wants to know the distance between earth and another planet you would normally need to specify a specific date and time so the calculation can be made. However, Google will now return an answer to a question like “how far is Neptune?” by explaining what factors may influence the answer and they provide an average for an answer in this case.

When Google “responds” to a question, it will display the result in a separate box at the top of the search results. Testing indicates the answers are normally composed of a snippet from a web site that normally appears in the top 10 results. Search is a constantly changing field though and even Google does not always get things right, like the results they show for the number of kids Will Smith has.

Have you found a question Google answered incorrectly? What is the most complicated question Google has answered for you?
