THX has released the THX tune-up app for Android devices to the Google Play store and is even making it available for free as part of a new promotion. Through February 3, 2014, the app will be free before reverting to the normal price of $1.99 USD worldwide. The THX tune-up app gives users an interactive tool to adjust their TV or projector and their speakers in order to optimize the picture and sound for their specific lighting conditions.
After connecting your smartphone to your video equipment using an HDMI cable, the app uses special video patterns and audio tests to make the following adjustments:
- Aspect ratio – ensures shapes and sizes are displayed in the correct proportions
- Brightness – makes certain shadow details and night scenes remain visible
- Contrast – ensures that various levels of white do not blend together or appear washed out
- Color – makes certain colors are balanced and not overly saturated
- Tint – ensures skin tones appear natural and not too green or red
- Speaker assignment – ensures that speakers are connected to the correct audio output
- Speaker phase – confirms that positive and negative speaker wires are connected properly and that all speakers are in phase
Along with the toolkit for optimizing your viewing experience, THX includes their “Deep Note” sound that can be accessed with the touch of a button, access to high definition THX trailers, a Moo Can feature that lets users tilt their phone to invoke a classic “moo” sound, and a support system called “Ask Tex.”
The THX tune-up app is only compatible with the following devices running at least Android 4.2.2:
- HTC One
- HTC One Max
- HTC One X
- HTC One X+
- Nexus 4
- Nexus 5
- Nexus 7-2013
- Nexus 10
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Galaxy Note 3
