Wait, what? In news that just became official, the Chinese based company Lenovo has just bought Motorola from Google for $2.91 billion dollars. If memory serves us right, Google purchased Motorola for about $13 billion just under two years ago, which is certainly a far cry for what Google was able to sell it to Lenovo for. Motorola is currently the #3 Android manufacturer in the US, and with Lenovo acquiring them, it certainly boosts their hope it capturing the some of the market share in the US.

“The acquisition of such an iconic brand, innovative product portfolio and incredibly talented global team will immediately make Lenovo a strong global competitor in smartphones. We will immediately have the opportunity to become a strong global player in the fast-growing mobile space,” said Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of Lenovo. “We are confident that we can bring together the best of both companies to deliver products customers will love and a strong, growing business. Lenovo has a proven track record of successfully embracing and strengthening great brands – as we did with IBM’s Think brand – and smoothly and efficiently integrating companies around-the-world. I am confident we will be successful with this process, and that our companies will not only maintain our current momentum in the market, but also build a strong foundation for the future.”

Lenovo will also acquire well over 2,000 patents owned by Motorola. Personally, I assumed those patents were the main reason Google bought Motorola in the first place. So now this begs the question, what do you guys think the reason is for Google to let go of Motorola after barely two years of acquiring them? Not to mention selling it for about $10 billion less than what they had initially bough it for.

Also, what does this mean for current Motorola devices (mainly the Moto X)? The Moto X has really gained plenty of traction since its release months ago, it has actually become the favorite device for plenty of Android enthusiasts that love the fact that Motorola works with Google. I’m sure Moto X buyers will now be worried whether the device will continue to get fast and swiftly updates. The good news that Lenovo intends to keep the Motorola brand identity.

I’m sure there’s so much more to this story that we’ll all learn more of as time passes. Hit up the source link for Google’s official statement regarding the matter.
