Even though Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak thinks the company is still innovative despite criticism of staleness, he did surprise a recent interviewer with one way he thinks the company could innovate – production of an Android powered smartphone. According to Wozniak, who made what amounts to an heretical statement for Apple fans, he thinks iAndroid “could compete very well. People like the precious looks of stylings and manufacturing that we do in our product compared to the other Android offerings.”

Given the variety in hardware being churned out by manufacturers bringing Android phones to market, it seems unlikely Android fans would go for such a device. Although there is a segment that seems to think the metal bodies of iPhones should be emulated. As for Apple purists, it is hard to say what their reaction to such a device might be. Apple could adopt Android, or fork the code like Amazon has done, and throw their own skin on top of it so that the general consumer may not know any different.

This is not the first time that Wozniak has indicated a desire to see Google and Apple work more closely rather than staying on their paths of being highly competitive. Last November Wozniak suggested Google and Apple, along with other major market players like Samsung, should do more “cross-licensing and sharing the good technology.”

If you can suspend your disbelief regarding Apple building an Android based smartphone, do you think there would be any benefit to such a device?
