Cannot back up

I too am getting the error message "The backup file name could not be used.
Please insure it is a valid path and that you have permission to access"
when I try to use the Windows XP backup utility.

I have a partitioned hard drive; my programs are on the C drive, and data is
on the D drive. I'm trying to back up data from the D drive. I've read the
discussions on this forum and understand that Windows XP cannot backup
directly to a CD. I want to back my data up to a removable hard drive, but
I'm getting the error message no matter what destination I try to use (C
drive, D drive or the removable drive).

I am not the administrator on this machine, and I wonder if this could be a
permissions problem.

Can you successfully create/open/modify/delete files on the removable hard
drive? And have you tried creating a new .bks file from scratch?

Hi Bruce,

What file name are you trying to use? What is the path? Can you
"Browse" to the drive and name it that way?

Yes, I have full access to all drives otherwise.

Hmmm... "creating a new .bks file from scratch." Not sure what this means; I
thought that's what I was doing by tryng to make this backup, so I really
don't know.

PS I'd better come up with a new name for myself; just saw posts from
another BruceM, and he was ripping someone for their post. That wasn't me!

Terry,

I tried backing up a single directory under the filename "trial.; it was ny
first try at this, so the name was C:\trial.bkf. I tried browsing to several
places to create files, but to no avail

Bruce,

So you're opening Backup, clicking the Backup tab, clicking the
folder(s) you want to back up, entering the drive AND file name in
"Backup media or file name", then clicking the Start Backup button, and
an error occurs. Correct?

Terry,

Yes, that's what I've been doing. Just before I responded to this I did it
again, step-by-step as you wrote it...and it worked! I am now the proud owner
of a brand new .bkf file.

I have no idea what just happened (or why), but won't look a gift horse in
the mouth.
