A couple days ago Samsung announced the devices in their portfolio for which they will provide an update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat in the U.S. However, Samsung did not say anything at the time about international devices. New information was released today indicating the list of international devices will largely mirror the U.S. list. The notable exception is the Samsung Galaxy S III, which did not make the cut.
Sources indicate the reason is that international versions of the Galaxy S III only have 1 GB of RAM making it unsuitable for the upgrade. This seems to be a suspect explanation though as the Samsung Galaxy Grand is on the list and it only has 1 GB of RAM as well. In addition, when Google announced KitKat, they made a point to note that the new version of the Android operating system had been designed to run on as little as 512K of memory as part of Project Svelte.
Clarification is being sought from Samsung regarding this situation in hopes that it was just an oversight. Otherwise, Galaxy S III users will be left looking for custom ROMs or investing in a newer device if they want to experience KitKat. The complete list of international devices is as follows:
- Samsung Galaxy Note 3
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
- Samsung Galaxy Note II
- Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition)
- Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
- Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1
- Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3
- Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8
- Samsung Galaxy Grand
- Samsung Galaxy Express 2
