I have a Windows 2003 R2 server running SQL Server 2000. This appears
in the event log every 15 minutes:

EventID: 7023
The Network Connections service terminated with the following error:
Invalid access to memory location.

Sometimes it's:

EventID: 7023
The Cryptographic Services service terminated with the following
error: Invalid access to memory location.

The other odd thing is I can't get to Windows Update with this
machine. I can get to other websites but WU takes foverer to load,
then asks me if I want to update the softare. I say yes and it just
sits there. In an article somewhere it suggested registering a list
of DLL's related to Windows Update. All of them registered except
this:

"Loadlibrary("wuaueng.dll") failed - Invalid access to memory
location."

I can find no reference to this "invalid access to memory location"
error anywhere, on any topic. Not from Google, MS, Usenet... I've
tried everything. I've seen hundreds of following errors for event id
7023 and this one is never mentioned.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

Hello,

this comes from WSUS(automatic update):
Loadlibrary("wuaueng.dll") failed - Invalid access to memory location

What is the version and size of this dll on your system ?

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

Thanks very much for the replies...

"Did you set WSUS through GPO?"

Sorry, I don't know what this means.

"Is the bits service started?"

Yes. It was set to Manual at first and not started. But it's
currently set to "Automatic" and Started. The Windows Update service
above it constantly says "Starting".

"When you manualy go on the windows update website, does it work ?"

It takes forever (1-2 mins) for the main page to load. (any other web
site smacks up like usual). It eventually comes up and prompts me to
Ok the Windows Component Publisher. I click Install and it sits there
for a long time, then returns the error:

"Error number: 0x8DDD0004

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. "

"Can you try regsvr32.exe /s "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll"

Did that, reported no errors, made no difference.

Tom

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

Can you kill wuauclt.exe process in memory and start manualy the automatic
update service ?
If ok, can you launch: wuauclt /detectnow

For the error from internet explorer:
Error message when you scan for updates on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based
computer: "Error number: 0x8DDD0004"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914227/en-us
(If you can do the resolution part)

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

"Can you kill wuauclt.exe process in memory and start manualy the
automatic update service ?"

That process is not listed in task manager. The Update service is in
a "Starting" state and cannot be stopped, changed or disabled.

"For the error from internet explorer:"

From that document:

"In the list of add-ons, click WUWebControl Class"

This doesn't appear in any of the add on lists.

Likely because none of the update components will install in the first
place I would imagine.

Thanks
Tom

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

that would not work, but can you still try wuauclt /detectnow ?

Can you compare
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
with another working computer ?

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

"can you still try wuauclt /detectnow"

It just returns a command prompt. No errors, no messages.

"Can you compare..."

Identical when compared to another working W2003R2 server.

Thanks
Tom

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

anything from c:\windows\windowsupdate.log ?

Else
You may disable the automatic update service, reboot,
launch processmonitor, filtering on wuauclt.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/processmonitor.mspx

put the automatic update to manual, and start it
1/Does it start correctly ?
2/Any weird things on processmonitor (acces denied...)

the 2/ may be a long time work

Re: Event ID: 7023 - Invalid access to memory location.

I think this is a job for paid support since this is a production
server. Thank you though, I really appreciate the responses.
