While much of the focus at MWC 2014 is on smartphone and tablet manufacturers and where they are heading with their devices, other companies are present to help show how they want to power those new devices. Intel was on hand today to announce two new Atom processors, the Merrifield and the Moorefield.
The 64-bit Atom Z3480, formerly known by the codename Merrifield, is a dual-core chip running at 2.13GHz. Using Intel’s 22nm Silvermont architecture, the processor includes an Intel XMM 7160 LTE chip and a PowerVR Series 6 graphics core. Intel says Z3480 equipped devices should start shipping during the second quarter.
Later in the year the Moorefield code-name chip will be available bringing Intels 64-bit Atom processors to a quad-core architecture at an announced speed of 2.3GHz. Like the Merrifield, the Moorefield processor will support LTE and come with an enhanced gpu.
Intel also took the opportunity to show off their XMM 7260 LTE chips which they claim can support simultaneous 300Mbps down and 50Mbps up speeds. All of the chips Intel is releasing promise gains not only in speed, but in better power management as well.
Along with the new chips, Intel announced a partnership with McAfee to help provide protection against malware on Android devices. The Intel Device Protection Technology (Intel DPT) will give enterprise customers the capability of segregating corporate and personal data on Intel-based Android devices.
To help with the push into the consumer market for smartphones and tablets, Intel has established partnerships with Lenovo, ASUS, Dell and Foxconn. Intel may not be the first name buyers think of when looking for a smartphone, but they are definitely making a big push into the market.
