WinZip is known as the company that launched the file compression utility in the early 90′s, and they are still getting over 30 million downloads per year. That company is now moving to the cloud, and have announced ZipShare, a file management system that works with many of the major online file hosting platforms.

ZipShare will not be another hosting platform – instead they are looking to launch as a platform that is more relevant to today’s world. WinZip launched version 17 in October 2012, and added support for cloud services in that version.

ZipShare will allow for quick sharing of files, much like how you would use other cloud hosting platforms. The files are zipped up upon uploading to your hosting service, which will save you space. Files can also have a password for protection. Once your file is uploaded, you can choose to share it via social media platforms or to email. You can also manage the files on your file hosting services under “My Files”.

The service is currently in beta, and during this beta period, all features are free. Later on, however, WinZip says that the free version will only include basic sharing. A pro version will cost $39.95/year, although WinZip is also exploring the possibility of a $9.95/month model.
