We’ve been excited to see NVIDIA’s 64-bit Tegra K1 processor in action ever since it was announced back in January, but benchmarks have been scarce and it’s obviously not in any devices just yet. Fortunately for our curiosity, an AnTuTu benchmark for a device with the 64-bit K1 processor has shown up, and it looks every bit as impressive as NVIDIA made it out to be two months ago.
The 64-bit chip showed up with a benchmark score of 43617, which is about 10k points higher than the Snapdragon 800 found in the current crop of flagship devices, and a few thousand points ahead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 and 801 chips. In certain CPU tests, the K1 faltered a bit compared to quad-core processors, but since it’s only a dual-core CPU, it makes sense. However, each of those cores still outperforms other quad-core processors, and the RAM test for the K1 was insanely high, so multitasking will be a great selling point for devices with this chip.
The benchmark also notes that the processor being tested was clocked at 3 GHz, which is higher than what was originally announced by NVIDIA. The 64-bit K1 was announced as a 2.5 GHz chip, but it’s always possible that NVIDIA will want to bump that up to stay competitive.
Since the Tegra K1 isn’t slated to be released in any devices until the second half of the year, NVIDIA still has some time to improve these already stellar scores for its newest processor. 2014 might be the year Qualcomm sees some serious competition.
