Google SVP Sundar Pichai today spoke at the SXSW conference, explaining that Google will be releasing an SDK that will make it easier for companies to create Android run wearable devices. While we don’t yet know if Google is itself planning any wearable devices, Pichai mantioned that Google was thinking of wearables on a “platform level”.
Pichai also told us that he sees a parallel between the evolution of the smartphone ecosystem and the wearable ecosystem, saying that while smartphones are becoming small computers, wearables are becoming sensor hubs. With the SDK, Google hopes to standardize how those sensors relay information to Android devices, which should hopefully mean developers will opt for Android based devices instead of creating custom operating systems.
