Like so many tech companies, ASUS is scrambling to become a player in the “wearable device” market. According to previous reports, their first device to reach the market is shaping up to be a smartwatch that will be “feature packed.” In an interview over the weekend, chairman of the board Jonney Shih indicated the new device will likely be used to complement a smartphone as opposed to being a standalone device. He also hopes to incorporate “more natural user interfaces such as voice or movement controls.”
ASUS, like other manufacturers, face several challenges in making a compelling smartwatch device. With small screens, touch-based commands and interactions can be a challenge, especially if the devices are intended to be worn while users are engaged in activities that make pausing to touch a screen undesirable. Incorporating voice commands or movement-based controls are one way to address this issue, but Shih acknowledges that more work is needed in these areas.
Adding voice or movement based functionality to a smartwatch means more computing power will be needed compared to a touch-based device, so power consumption and battery life issues have to be addressed as well. Shih believes ASUS will have to lower the power needs of a smartwatch device to about one tenth the level of a typical smartphone.
Although no details were provided about an expected timeline for ASUS to produce a smartwatch, where they plan to sell them, or what kind of price point they are targeting, Shih did say part of the ASUS strategy is to compete with “attractive prices.”
